January is said to be the month of new year’s resolutions, new beginnings or a fresh start. I always like to say it’s a time to set new goals. Perhaps that is because since I was about 20 years old, I have been self-employed with different business interests, so I got in the habit of setting personal and business goals each year. I always look at the goals from the previous year and reflect on them to see which ones I achieved and the ones I feel I did not accomplish. As the calendar turns to a new year, look at the stage you are in, in your life and set some goals to reflect your lifestyle today. My wife and I are both seniors, so let’s explore some goals for that stage of life.
- Stay Healthy in Mind and Body
- I think as you get older, you tend to concentrate more on maintaining good health. Staying independent for as long as possible is a goal many seniors have. Eating healthy, drinking lots of water… along with having a good attitude is important.
- Exercise – Keep Active
- It is very important as you age to stay as active as you can. There are all kinds of information on TV or the Internet that you can do in your home like stretches, walking, and yoga – for all exercise levels. If you are one that prefers going to a gym, most communities have programs with different classes and options. Some Medicare plans offer complimentary memberships to certain gyms. If you go that route, pick a machine or class you are interested in. Also going with a friend tends to help you stick with a program.
- Stay Mentally Sharp
- My wife and I both like to read and she enjoys doing word finds. There are many ways to use your mind such as puzzles, sudoku, and games. If you are the type to do these in book form, great but if you prefer a tablet or computer that way is available too. The main thing is to schedule 15-30 minutes a day and work at something.
- Stay Social
- This is very important especially as we age. In younger years of employment and raising a family… life is busy and you had more contact with people through the day. As you age and become not as active you must look for ways to interact with others. Volunteer at a church or community event or organization. Gather with friends, family, or neighbors on a regular basis. If you have a hobby or interest such as gardening, card playing, golf or any other interest… going to events for those help you connected to people who enjoy the same things.
- Keep Track of Your Finances
- The financial planner part of me encourages you to always be aware of your finances. Have a monthly budget for your expenses and set aside money for any big-ticket items you see may be in your future. Meet with your financial planner at least once a year to review your portfolio and make sure it is still in line with your lifestyle and especially your comfort level.
Entering a new year is an opportunity to reflect on the past, set new goals for the future and enjoy the year ahead. Our golden years are meant to be enjoyed and lived in good health and happiness.
